On September 19, 1971, Sarah and Dick wrote from opposite sides of the world — she in San Antonio, he in Vietnam — and both still had their heads in the clouds, dreaming about their week together in Hawaii. Sarah bakes a batch of chocolate chip cookies and even jokes about maybe learning to cook — something that always made us laugh in my family, because cooking was my dad’s thing. Meanwhile, Dick compares breakfast to eggs Benedict and champagne, the same breakfast they’d shared on R&R just a week earlier. Their letters show how deeply they were still wrapped in the glow of that reunion, carried by a once-in-a-lifetime love
