It appears that many people who are highly competent at their jobs are also seen as being pompous. Conversely, morally righteous and good people often seem to lose in a world of tough competition. I don't know whether bad character is inborn or acquired, but I don't think it is necessary to abandon one's innate goodness to become evil. People of good character need to know what they have and still take on the world of competition.
