第6课

1. Supper's ready. 晚餐准备好了。
这句话也可以说 Dinner's ready. 也有人会这么说 Dinner's (Supper's) on the table.
supper 和 dinner 的区别：一般来说，dinner 是指一天中的主餐，多指“晚餐”。

2. I'm sure today's dinner is curry and rice. 我相信今天晚餐一定是咖喱饭。

到了晚饭时间——
A nice smell is coming from the kichen. 厨房里传来一阵香味。
It smells like curry. 闻起来像是咖喱。
Gee, my stomach says it's time to eat. 哇，我的肚子在说该吃饭了。
I have a good appetite tonight. 今晚我胃口大开。
所以 I have a third helping. “我吃了三碗饭。” helping 是“（食物）一份”

3. I'm so full I can't move. 我吃太饱而动不了。
这句话用的句型是 so...that...“太……以至于……”，不过在日常对话里，so...that...的 that 常常会被省略。
表示“我吃饱了”可以说 I'm full. 还可以说 I've had enough. 或者 I've had my fill. 如果说 I can't take another bite. 是“我饱得多一口也吃不下了”的意思。
如果吃得过饱而 burp “打嗝”的话，要记得说一声 Excuse me. 以示礼貌。打喷嚏 sneeze 的话也是说 Excuse me.

4. The dirty dishes are all washed and dried. 所有的脏碗碟都洗干净擦干净了。
dry 是“擦干（碗、碟）”，还有一个“擦”是 wipe。
“擦眼泪”有时会用 dry，如果说“去把你的脸擦一擦。”常说 Wipe your face.

第5课

1. I lie on the couch. 我躺在长椅上。
lie 是“躺下”，过去式和过去分词变化是 lie - lay - lain。
还有一个动词 lay，“横置；使躺下”的意思，变化是 lay - laid -laid。

2. I read the evening newspaper. 我看晚报。
除了 read，还可以用 browse through，scan，glance at，skim through 表示“粗略过目”“大致看”。纸质报纸或手机新闻都可以用。
“订阅”subscribe ，可以是传统报纸、杂志，比如，I subscribe to three newspaper. 我订阅三份报纸。
也可以是电子的，比如 subscribe to my favourite blog “订阅我最喜欢的博客”。
很多网站会自动弹出一个窗口，写着“ SUBSCRIBE（订阅）”。  
我要说——Please subscribe to my channel. 请订阅我的频道。

3. I take out my contact lenses. 我摘下隐形眼镜。
take out 是“取出”，“取下”是 remove。
反过来，“戴上”是 put in，比如说 I had no time to put in my contact lenses in the morning. 我早上没有时间戴上隐形眼镜。
contact lenses “隐形眼镜”和 glasses “（普通的）眼镜”都需要用复数形式。

第4课

1. My kids are watching TV when I get home. 我回家时，孩子们在看电视。
一个孩子是 a child，复数是 children；口语中会常用 kid(s)。
“看”这个动词有 see，look，watch。
“注意地看”是用 watch，比如 I watch TV. 请注意，这句话里TV的前面不用冠词 a 或者 the。
如果说 see the TV，意思是“我看见电视机”。
look at the TV 则是“查看电视机内的零件”的意思。

2. Oh, no. The kids are completely glued to the TV. 噢，真糟糕。孩子们又在全神贯注地看电视。
completely 是副词“完全”，glue 这里是动词“目不转睛地盯着……”，be glued to the TV “全神贯注地看电视”，也可能是 be glued to the cell phone “全神贯注地看手机”。
glue 还可以作名词“胶”“胶水”“胶棒”。
“和孩子打招呼”say hello to the kids，有可能“他们只是回个头，但对我连个招呼都没有。” They turned around, but they didn't even say hi to me.

3. The children are doing their homework at the dining room. 孩子们在餐桌上写作业。
在美国，孩子的房间中不太放做功课的桌子，一般是在餐厅桌子上做功课。
“餐桌”是 dining-table。
大人的书房则称为 study。

4. Dad is sleeping on the couch. 爸爸在长椅上睡觉。
couch 是指“长椅”，也可以说 sofa “沙发”，可是，sofa 常指“有扶手，有靠背的长椅”。

第3课

1. I'm worn out. 我累死了。
worn out 是“累死了，疲惫不堪”的意思，等于 exhausted 或 tired out。比如可以说 I'm so worn out from work that I don't feel like eating anything. 我工作得很累，不想吃东西。
对于疯狂工作的人，我们会称他们是 workaholic “工作狂”。
工作狂们要小心避免 work oneself to death “过劳死”。

2. It's stuffy in this room. 这房间很闷。
stuffy 是“空气很闷”，如果“通风良好”是用 drafty。a drafty room “一个通风好的房间”，a stuffy room “不通气的房间”。
不通气的话，可以打开窗户，let some fresh air in “让新鲜空气进来”。
不过也有可能——
It doesn't make any difference.“没有什么差别。” 
过了一会儿，还是关上窗户，turn on the air conditioner “打开了空调”好了。

3. I'm uncomfortable because my body is sticky. 我身上粘粘的，很不舒服。
sticky 意思是“粘的”，还可以表示“（天气）闷热潮湿”，还有一种非正式的意思是“（情况）棘手的，困难的”。
It's still hot here. 这里还很热。
我一般会采取两种方法——
“尽快换衣服”change my clothes quickly ，“站在空调前面” stand in front of the air conditioner 。
这么一来，就不会流汗了。This will stop my sweating. 
我感觉很舒服。 I'm feeling comfortable.

第2课

1. I take off my shoes. 我脱鞋。
“脱（鞋）”是 take off，也可以说 step out of。
反过来，“穿（鞋）”是 put on 或 step into。
“系（鞋带）”用 tie 或者 lace。lace 还可以作名词“蕾丝”（蕾丝就是英语的音译）。
“解开（鞋带）”是用 untie 或 unlace，比如 I unlaced and took off my sneakers. 我解开鞋带并脱下球鞋。sneakers 是指“帆布橡胶底的运动鞋”。

2. I hang up my coat. 我把衣服挂起来。
hang up 是“挂上”，只用 hang 也可以。
要表示“（挂）在……”用介词 on，比如 I hung up my hat on the coatrack. 我把帽子挂在了衣架上。“挂”hung 是 hang 的过去式，hang 是不规则动词，时态变化是 hang (原形) - hung (过去式) - hung (过去分词)。
“挂断电话 hang up the telephone。

3. My clothes are scattered all over the place. 我的衣服散得满地都是。
scatter 是“散开，分散”，all over...是“到处”。 
“（散布）在……的四周/在地板上”用 around the place / on the floor。
“杂乱不堪的状态”可以用 mess，比如说 His room is in a mess. 他的房间真是乱七八糟。

第1课

1. I ring the doorbell. 我按门铃。

ring 做名词是“铃”，做动词就是“按铃”。

我敲门。 I knock the door.

我把钥匙插入钥匙孔。 I put(insert) the key in the lock(keyhole). 

我开门锁。I unlock the door.

我开门。I open the door.

有人按门铃时去“应门”是 I answer the door.

2. My wife opens the door for me. 我太太为我开门。

“为我（开门）”是用 for me。

提到自己的太太时使用 my wife，而不是 the wife。

主语可以换成 my husband “我的丈夫”，my child “我的小孩”，my mom “我的妈妈”，my dad “我的爸爸”，my roommate “我的室友”，等等。

3. Nobody's home yet. 还没有人回家。

也可以说 There's nobody home yet.

一般来说 house 指的是“房屋”，而 home 指的是“家，家庭”。

有人在家吗？ Is anybody home？

第五章 下班以后

第10课

1. The neon lights have lit up the area. 霓虹灯照亮了那一带区域。
lit 是“照亮” light 的过去式。light 的名词形式就是“灯” -> neon light “霓虹灯”。 
霓虹灯“照亮”用 light up 或 illuminate 都可以。
“附近，这一带”可以用 the town，比如 The town is lit up. 这一带被霓虹灯照得通明。（这句话里用现在完成时是表示“这一带仍然很亮”的状态。）

2. My neighbor's dog barks at me. 邻居的狗对我叫。
“邻居”是 neighbor，用 my neighbor 时，表示“隔壁邻居”或“很近的邻居”。
“（狗）叫”是 bark，“（狗）对……叫” 是 bark at...
狗摇尾巴。A dog is wagging his tail. wag “摇摆”，tail “尾巴”。

3. I'm almost home at last. 我终于快到家了。
almost home 是“几乎到家”的意思。
It's nice to have someone waiting for me. 有人在等我的感觉真好。
I'm home. 我回来了。
回到家总会感觉 It's been a long day. “漫长的一天”终于又过去了。

第五章 下班以后

第9课

1. It's dark on this street. 这条街道很暗。
指 street “街道”很暗时，用 dark on (along) this street；如果指的是“这一带”“这一片”较为宽阔的场所则用 in this area。
还可以用街道做主语，就说 This street is dark.
这条街很亮。 It's bright on this street.

2. It's dark and scary here. 这一带既漆黑又恐怖。
scary 是“可怕的”“吓人的”“恐怖的”。
Walking alone late at night is really scary. 深夜独行极为恐怖。
这种时候——
Not only for women, but for men, too. 不仅对女性，男人也一样。

3. Someone is walking behind me. 有人走在我后面。
“在后面（走）”是用 behind，而不用 back，walk back 是“走回头路”的意思。
someone 可以换成 somebody —> Somebody is walking behind me.
这句话还可以这么说——
I feel like somebody is following close behind me. 我觉得后面有人紧跟着。
I hear steps following me. 我听到有人跟踪（跟着我）的脚步声。steps 是“步伐”“脚步”的意思。

第五章 下班以后

第8课

1. It takes me more than an hour to get home from work. 我从工作单位回家需要一个多小时。

“花时间”是 take time。如果想说“不到一个小时”是 less than an hour，“超过一个钟头”是 more than an hour 或 over an hour。很多时候高峰时间会花更长的时间——高峰期间需要多花二十多分钟。It takes twenty more minutes during rush hour.

2. The last train has already left. 末班车已经开走了。

末班车是 last train 或 last bus ；用完成式是 has (already) left (gone)。last 是“最后的”，但是 latest 除了有“最后的”意思外，还有“最新的，最近的”意思，如 I bought Stephen King's latest book. 我买了斯蒂芬·金最新的书。

3. There aren't any taxis around here. 附近没有出租车。

这句还可以说 There are no taxis around here. 或 Taxis don't come around here. 或 You can't catch any taxis around here.

“这一带”可以用 in this area，比如说 Taxis aren't easy to catch in this area. 这一带很难叫到出租车。

关于 taxi 的复数形式，taxis 或者 taxies 都可以，发音相同。

第五章 下班以后

第7课

1. Mmm. The first gulp is really good. 唔，开头一杯真过瘾。
gulp 是名词“一大口”，还可以作动词“狼吞虎咽”“吞咽”。
对爱喝啤酒的人来说， the first gulp “头一杯”真是过瘾。
这时就可以说 Sure hits the spot. hit the spot 是（吃的、喝的）“特别满足”“正合需求”的意思。
其他类似的说法还有 
The first sip is always the best. 第一口最棒。 sip 是“（喝）一小口”。
That really does the job. 那真过瘾。
所以，原本只是打算 Only one glass.“只喝一杯。”结果又来了第二杯、第三杯……

2. I'm feeling a little tipsy. 我感觉有点醉了。
tispy 是 slightly drunk “微醺”“稍有醉意”的意思。
有的人喝醉了就会“大吼大叫”yell，还可能 start complaining about one's boss “开始大发老板的牢骚”。
He's ruining things for everyone else. 他破坏了大家的酒兴。

3. Oh, don't put your head on my shoulder. 喂，别把头靠在我的肩膀上。
喝多了就会东倒西歪。如果是你稍微喝多了，就说
I drank a little too much. 我稍微喝多了。
走路不稳，不知道自己在哪，Where am I? 一直“打哈欠” yawn，“靠在朋友的肩膀上” lean on my friend's shoulder ，这时候朋友可能会说
Get your head off of me. 把你的头挪开！
