Let's cut spending! And then... what exactly? The all too common advice that you need to "cut spending" implies that your level of consumption is simply too high. Ask Jesse: Perfect YNAB, Tithing Confusion, and More Credit Card Comments

Jesse answers a question from a listener who argues that becuase he carries enough cash to cover his credit card spending at all times, he is not riding the float and therefore is gaming the credit card companies. Jesse quotes Charlie Munger -- "show me the incentive, and I'll show you the outcome" (he actually said outcome not behavior) -- and observes that financial institutions have big incentives to encourage more spending, because spending increases their fees. So where there's an incentive, there's a behavior they want to encourage, and using credit cards is it. Gaming the Credit Card System... Maybe

Jesse argues that the common refrain of a thing having "inherent value" or "intrinsic value" is not actually a thing. As Jesse explains, value is a moving target, constantly shifting along with our desires and material circumstances. To a starving man, food is worth more than gold. To that same man well-fed, it can be worth little. We see this with our own money -- as our circumstances change, the categories we prioritze shift. Rule 3, roll with the punches, acknowledges the ever-shifting nature of our needs and desires, and challenges us to make trade-offs to materialize those changes in our financial plans. 121: Embracing Who You Are

It's a heavy one, but I feel that it's important to share this, even though it's hard.

I'm sharing my story of losing my seventh baby. 

Motivation has to go hand in hand with suffering. We need the support, prayers, and encouragement of one another when we're carrying our crosses, and that's one of the graces I found in the helplessness of my miscarriage.

Even (or maybe especially!) in the midst of suffering, we have the opportunity to receive love, grace, and the good intentions of those around us.

Pray for me, friends. I'm praying for you.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Gary Bauer interviews Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. Tony shares that now is the time for Christians to stand firm in our faith as the enemy seeks to separate us from our source of strength, the Word of God. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Even though it was the weekend, Callie woke up especially early. Today she was going to play at her best friend Anora’s house.  Callie and Anora had a lot in common. They both loved playing what they called “imagination stories,” where they would make up a story then act it out. Sometimes they were adventurers exploring a new land. Other times they pretended to be geologists, making discoveries about the planet. And other times, they pretended to be veterinarians, taking care of their stuffies as if they were real animals needing treatment. The best part of playing “imagination stories” is they could pretend to be anything they wanted to!

On this day, Anora told Callie she had also invited over another friend – a new friend that Callie had never met. When Callie had asked who the friend was, Anora said it was Dragon! Having lived on Ahway Island for some time now, Callie had seen Dragon flying overhead in the sky, but had never actually met Dragon up close. Generally, Callie felt shy about meeting new friends, but Anora had spoken so nicely about Dragon that Callie felt more excited than shy. She was ready to meet Dragon.
