A daughter's 911 call. A mother stabbed 70 times in her bed. And a story so full of lies that detectives spent months going down a rabbit hole.
On July 16, 2012, 16-year-old Keri Murphy called police screaming that someone had broken into her family's Humble, Texas home [citation:5]. Inside, officers found 48-year-old Mary Ann Murphy dead in her bed — stabbed more than 70 times while she slept [citation:3]. Keri pointed police toward a male classmate who even confessed. But nothing added up.
The truth was far darker. Keri was in a secret relationship with 20-year-old Rebecca Keller. Mary Ann had tried to stop it because of the age gap [citation:2]. So the two plotted murder. Keller bought the knife. Keller stabbed Mary Ann while Keri stayed in her room — or so she claimed. Recorded jail calls revealed the truth: Keller admitted she had done the killing, but both were guilty [citation:8]. Keri was sentenced to 30 years. Keller got 60 [citation:4].
Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play — because the daughter who called 911 was the one who planned it all.
