Standing Back, Drawing Near

We finished our seven-month odyssey in the Ten Commandments last week. This week, we look at the epilogue in which Moses records the people's response to the law, and the revelation which God gave immediately following that response. We see the two responses to the law encapsulated in v. 21, where the people stand back but Moses draws near. Standing back and drawing near — these are the responses the proclamation of the law engenders. We love the law and the lawgiver, for the law is written on our hearts and we intuitively recognize the lawgiver as Lord. We also fear the law and the lawgiver, for to hear the proclamation of the law is to know our own guilt and shame. The solution, the one in whom this conflict between drawing near and standing back is resolved, is the Mediator. Here it is Moses who draws near while the people stand back — but ultimately, it is Jesus who draws near, and in His drawing near heals our fear and desire to draw back. The law makes us draw back and seek a Mediator, but it also makes us draw near in worship.
