Show, don't tell...

This is a short book and an easy read that provides valuable tips on how to engage your audience better across various topics of discussion. I say discussion rather than lecture because the point of the book is to make your topics more relate-able, thus more engaging or interesting, to your audience. The writing world has long known the difference between show, don't tell, your story; so it makes perfect sense to apply this to oral communication as well. Now not every topic in every seminar can be emotionally involving for all audiences and speakers alike, but there is enough value here that most readers should be able to apply it enough that they can break out of the "narrative" and enter a "discussion" during speaking engagements.

This is a great, compact read with useful pointers on how to move your presentations from meh to incredibly engaging. The main idea is you need to stop putting an emotional distance between you and your audience and instead engage with them and take them on a journey with you to show them what you mean.

I highly recommend this book and I personally think every scientist should read it. It would improve public engagement immensely.

A Stand Out

This is a good little book, it is 129 pages in length, but not a word wasted or dragged out. Some bigger books could have done with a good edit but this Storyshowing is not like that at all. He helps you work out a way to connect with your audience more effectively. He is also a good example to people who confront tragedy or disability and have to re invent themselves. Worth the purchase price.
