Eight years ago, I was on a TV show to innovate a concept called “social gifting”. 1-800-Flowers wanted to do something groundbreaking, spend $100,000 without using television or print.  This today feels easy, just throw it in the Facebook ads, however at the time that wasn’t an option, and wasn’t a thing that anybody understood you could actually do for any type of business objective.  So we had to come up with an idea on how to spend $100,000 in a way that with no paid advertising, and no press, we could create Profit in a reoccurring high-volume fashion.  We ended up figuring out a way to utilize Facebook, as is still very new and innovative social networking platform, To develop a community, and a learned behavior, in a way that generated positive customer engagement and revenue at scale.  So what are you do, when Facebook ads don’t even exist yet, and you need to spend six figures in 90 days to change the world… Well, you invent a concept called “social gifting”.  And the result of this, was for about a year you could actually buy people gift cards to Starbucks or flour companies or other brands and directly have it delivered to them on the Internet, in a way that Facebook is about to introduce again.  This is how we changed the world.
