Today I had the privilege of talking to the head strength and conditioning coach at Hobart and William Smith Colleges: Chris Gray. For anyone unfamiliar with the combination of those two schools they are indeed two institutions but operating together. Coach Gray will explain that dynamic in the first couple minutes of the conversation so no need to go to Wikipedia. Coach Gray was great to talk to, a strength coach has such a unique perspective on athletics as he works with over 580 athletes, 23 programs and coaches, balancing all of that to have a cohesive program himself. He explains how his staff has simplified things as much as possible and the focus on coaching and caring for the individual first-something he pulls from President Roosevelt. A theme throughout the conversation is self-awareness and he does something pretty awesome with his team and a few of the teams he works with to help them see where they are actually at in terms of the little things and daily/weekly activities. It was a great conversation all around and great to hear a strength coach who is so passionate about developing leadership and all around character in athletes that are not first and foremost his athletes. So please enjoy the conversation with Chris Gray on another episode of the Captains Coach Podcast.
