So as a rookie teacher, I created opportunity. 초임 교사 시절, 저는 기회를 잡았습니다.
I had a kid one day come into my class having been stabbed the night before. 하루는 한 아이가 전날 밤에 칼에 찔려 교실로 들어왔습니다.
I was like “You need to go to a hospital, the school nurse, something.” 전 말했습니다. “병원에 가보는 것이 좋겠다, 보건실이나 그런데 라도 가보지 그러니”
He’s like “No, Miss. I’m not going. I need to be in class because I need to graduate.” 그 아이는 아뇨 선생님, 가지 않을래요. 전 졸업해야 하기 때문에 교실에 있어야되요. 라고 하더군요.
So he knew that I was not going to let him be a victim of his circumstance, 아이는 제가 그를 둘러싼 환경으로부터 자신이 희생양이 되도록 내버려두지 않을거란 걸 알고 있었던거죠.
but we were going to push forward and keep moving on. 우리는 계속 앞으로 나아가며 일했습니다.
And this idea of creating a safe haven for our kids 그리고 아이들을 위한 안식처를 만들어야겠다고 마음 먹었고,
and getting to know exactly what they’re going through, 아이들이 겪고 있는 것이 무엇인지 정확히 알기 위해
getting to know their families. 그들의 가족에 대해서 알아야 했습니다.
– I wanted that, but I couldn’t do it in a school with 1600 kids, 그렇게 하고 싶었지만 1600명의 학생들을 대상으로 할 순 없었어요.
and teachers turning over year after year after year. 하지만 게다가 선생님들은 해가 지날 때마다 학교를 옮겼죠.
