Episode #307: That Other Impeachment

There’s a new senator-to-be in Georgia, ready to be sworn in once Johnny Isakson (R) makes his health-related resignation official later this month.  It’s Kelly Loeffler, a relatively unknown big GOP donor, who was picked by Gov. Brian Kemp.  Kemp’s decision to ignore President Trump’s choice for the seat, Congressman Doug Collins, has resulted in a widespread revolt by national conservatives, who said Kemp had “betrayed” the president.  Greg Bluestein of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the firestorm has yet to go away and that Collins is still mulling a challenge to Loeffler in next year’s contest.

The withdrawal of a rightwing challenger to North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis in next year’s Republican primary is considered good news for Tillis, one of the more vulnerable senators up for re-election in 2020.  But, Jeff Tiberii of radio station WUNC says Tillis is not out of the woods just yet.

And, 21 years ago this week the House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach President Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.  James Rogan, now a California judge but in 1998 was a member of the committee, recalls the pressure he was under as he decided how to vote.
