"Adelantado" in Spanish means, "advance man", or "one who comes first", and was the term given to Spaniards by their King as having the right to rule over newly discovered territories, provided they returned a percentage of riches to the king.

During his term as US Ambassador to Spain, gifted writer Washington Irving stayed at the legendary Alhambra, where many of their old tales legends reached him, and he retold them. This is such a tale.
