TAS 621: Why Josh and Jill Stanton CLOSED Their $300k Online Business (BIG Lessons Learned)

What does it take to build a thriving brand online? How do you create a following and leverage your influence to achieve your goals? What happens when you feel the need to make a shift and end up walking away from the very thing that brought you all that success? On this episode of The Amazing Seller, you’ll hear from Scott as he welcomes his guest, Jill Stanton. Jill and Josh Stanton are the co-founders of Screw The Nine To Five. You don’t want to miss a minute of this engaging episode featuring Josh and Jill's story! Hard work pays off. Jill and Josh started their journey in 2011 working jobs they saw no future in and decided that they needed to make a change. They leapt and started putting together an ecommerce business focused on skin care. While it took a lot of hard work and sleepless nights, their hard work paid off, and they were able to secure their first month with $1,000 in profit. They ended up selling that business for $50,000 and went on to start several other businesses in 2012. The big takeaway from Jill and Josh’s initial success is that they were sick of their current circumstances and decided to do something about it. In short, they took action! They weren’t experts in skin care; they were just willing to go out there, put in the work, and trust that profit would follow and it did! Don’t become a slave to your business! Success and growth are a what every business leader is after, right? But what happens when all of the success becomes a weight that drags you down? From Jill and Josh, the complexity and daily demand of their business began to take a toll and caused them to rethink their approach. The last thing you want in business is to find yourself shackled to something that doesn’t fulfil you. It might sound crazy, but their story could be your story! What will you do when that moment comes and feel like you’ve become a slave to your business? Will you stay committed and miserable or will you make the changes necessary? To hear how Jill and Josh pivoted and took their efforts in a new direction, make sure to listen to this episode of The Amazing Seller! What do you really want? At the end of the day, one of the best things you can do for your business is to identify your “why.” If you’ve been around the TAS community for very long, you know that Scott is passionate about helping sellers like you figure out this important aspect of entrepreneurship. Do you know your “why?” When was the last time you reevaluated it? For some people that “why” will be a constant but for others, it will need to change as their business grows. TAS 608: UPDATE: NEW Inventory TAX Law DEBATE for Ecommerce Sellers

Have you ever had a moment when you got amazing news and then a few minutes later you find out that the news wasn’t as great as you thought it was? Unfortunately, a similar situation has cropped up in ecommerce circles with the new tax law. Here to help bring clarity to the subject is Josh Bauerle. In his conversation with Scott, Josh explains the confusion surrounding the tax law, how it will affect ecommerce sellers like you, steps you can take to make sure you are working off of the right information, and much more. Don’t miss a minute of this informative episode of The Amazing Seller! Wait, what happened? Like most ecommerce sellers you were probably pumped to hear about the new change in the tax policy that allows businesses to write off inventory whether they sell it or not. This news was hailed as a game changer as it would save small business owners a ton of costs when it comes to taxes. Sometimes that old saying holds, “If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Josh Bauerle and Scott took their time and did their due diligence tracking down all the info they thought they’d need to bring this new change to the TAS community. As it turns out, the tax policy is not as clear as they thought it would be on this change. The debate continues as different CPA’s have different takes on how business owners should interpret the new tax law. Why you need a CPA. This issue serves as a prime example to show ecommerce sellers why they need to have established a relationship with a CPA that they can trust. The benefit of having a relationship with a CPA who knows your specific business is that they can take a look at this new tax policy and give you their professional opinion on how you should adjust your business practices accordingly. If you only take your financial advice from what you hear or read online, pause! You need a CPA in your corner helping you through all the ins and outs. Don’t try to game the system. If you’ve been around the TAS community for very long, you know that Scott works hard to make sure that the advice he gives toes the ethical line. He doesn’t want to walk right up to it or mess around with shady business practices, and neither should you! Some voices in the ecommerce community are sharing ways you can manipulate your business and game the system to work in your advantage. You should see blaring red lights when this happens! While it may take more work and cause you to take the long route to success, keeping your business practices ethical will allow you to build something you can be proud of. To hear more about this tax policy news and more from Josh and Scott, make sure to listen to this episode of The Amazing Seller! TAS 573: Amazon Hits 1 TRILLION and What This Means For Private Label Sellers (Good or BAD?)

Have you heard the news? Amazon has hit 1 Trillion in market value! Can you even imagine what 1 trillion looks like? What does this news mean for ecommerce sellers like you? On this episode of The Amazing Seller, you’ll hear from Scott and Chris as they go over this recent Amazon news. Don’t miss a minute of this helpful episode! Partner with Amazon, don’t become dependent on it! If you’ve been around the TAS community for very long you know that Scott is passionate about helping sellers like you diversify your ecommerce business. The reason is, Scott has seen way too many businesses go under because they were dependent on one product in their brand or one platform to sell on. Don’t fall for that same mistake! Get your business off the ground and running using Amazon as a well-resourced partner then quickly look for ways to grow your brand independent of Amazon. To hear more about this vital strategy, make sure to listen to this engaging episode of The Amazing Seller! What does the future of ecommerce look like? As Amazon continues its march toward world domination, what will the future of the ecommerce industry evolve into? Will we see Amazon gobble up more retail chains as they did with Whole Foods? Will Walmart and others start to give Amazon some serious competition? According to Chris, you should expect to see more categories like groceries continue to open up as Amazon challenges the way we’ve always thought about what nicely “Fits” into the box of ecommerce. Make sure to listen to this episode of The Amazing Seller as Scott and Chris expand on this topic and much more! Don’t be afraid of change! Let’s face it, we’ve been conditioned to reflexively fear change whenever it rears its ugly head. Is that the best approach when Amazon rolls out a new policy change or an update to their TOS? While it can be helpful to be skeptical of changes that come down the road, it’s a good idea to remain open and ready to adapt. The changes that Amazon has rolled out over the years have, for the most part, been changes that have forced sellers to become more engaged with their business and that’s a positive!
