Everyone is scared of a pivot in their business, but those who are at the top…do it scared. They take the leap. Pull the plug, communicate with your people and just go! You don’t always have to have the whole thing planned out before you start. Don’t get paralyzed and just take the first step.

6 months from now you are going to wish you had started today! The pivot might be scary and unknown, but your future self will thank you. When you make a pivot and change you can show up more authentically, speak more clearly to your clients and serve people really well.

You don’t have to feel behind when the calendar rolls from one year to the next. You can actually put your business ahead by doing some work now in December. What you need is an action plan. On today’s podcast we’re not only talking about how to create that action plan, but also why you should plan for the new year in the 4th quarter. 

December is Typically a Slower Month

Start planning ahead now while business is a little slower. Don’t take the whole month off. It can shoot you in the foot because you don’t know what you’re doing when the new year starts. If you spend a little bit of time now, you can plan ahead and then hit the ground running on January 1. It’s not necessarily about figuring out every little detail for the entire year, it’s about having a general idea of where you’re going. 

Start the Year with a Plan 

We’re tired in January. The holidays take a lot out of us. If we wait until January to create a plan, we’ll just put it off and potentially lose the entire month. Take some time now to get ahead and start with a plan. 

Here are some simple steps to follow to create a plan: 

Having a Plan is a Good Way to Run a Business

It puts you ahead of other businesses who aren’t planning ahead. You also know your schedule, so it frees up brain space. People often think that having a plan ties you down, but it actually frees you up! This is the difference between playing offense and defense in our business. We are living on the defense - we’re just responding and reacting to everything. Instead, we can go on the offense for 2024 and plan ahead. You are stepping into God’s plan for you and saying yes to his invitation and not just waiting around for something to happen.

Happy Sales Overload Week! You get so much thrown at you this week for Black Friday! And there will be some great sales out there - with good advertising that pulls you in. We want to help you make solid decisions about what to buy, and not buy, this weekend! This is a great weekend to step into being the CEO of your business as you make a purchase - either way, it’s business buyer beware: don’t get duped! 

What Do You NEED for Your Business? 

Take a minute to write a list of what you actually need in your business right now. What are some upcoming expenses you have that you really need? This could be education, products, or equipment. Do the thinking ahead of time, so you know what to look for and what to ignore. Also spend time thinking about what your budget actually is. There will be a lot of good sales pitches coming your way and it’s not worth going into debt on a whim. Sometimes debt can be good, but not based on an emotional buying decision. Confidently say no to what is coming your way and be ready for when they are on sale to be able to say yes.

Will This Move My Business Forward?

Alleviate the shiny object syndrome by answering this question before hitting “purchase”. This takes a lot of self-awareness to know where your business is right now, what you need and where you are headed in the next year. Instead of being wishy-washy about your business, take a few minutes ahead of time to know exactly what will be the best purchase to move your business forward. This puts you in the driver’s seat instead of someone else deciding for you because they had an amazing sales page.  

Do You Have the Bandwidth to Invest Right Now?

If you purchase something right now - education or equipment - do you have the capacity to start using it right now? Start thinking about your purchases as a time investment as well as a monetary one. As business owners, we also have to look to the future and what you have the capacity for this coming year. Is this really the best time to be investing in something that will take 3-6 months or longer into the future if your spring is going to be crazy? 

Will You Lose Money by Signing Up Now?

If you sign up for this program right now, will you be able to start using it right now? If it’s a monthly subscription and you won’t be using it for 3-4 months, then it’s not worth it to purchase it right now, even if it is on sale. If you can’t go all in on the program, equipment, or service, then just wait to purchase it until later. There is an emotional piece to buying as well. If you purchase it and don’t use it, then you have a guilt hanging over your head, which takes up space in our brain.

Wherever you go, you bring your energy with you. When Sarah was a school administrator, no matter what meeting she had just attended - which might have been heated - she had to work hard to bring the right energy with her as she went about the building. The same goes for Lisa in her business. The traffic on the way to the photoshoot might have been terrible, but the customer needs a friendly face and a confident photographer. How you show up in your business will radiate out to your clients. Without realizing it, you might be sowing seeds of desperation in your business. And it’s impacting you more than you know. 

Signs Of Desperation

Here are some signs you might be sowing seeds of desperation. 

In order to avoid these signs, be super clear about what you offer. Know your audience and the transformation that you offer. Practice, practice, practice talking about your business when you are just starting out. 

How Desperation is Impacting Your Business

Desperation is impacting your business and your clients aren’t buying from you. Your marketing, social media posts, and sales offers are coming across as desperation. People buy from others who are confident. Ultimately, they may buy from you, but then they end up being dissatisfied because you over promised and underperformed or it didn’t get them the transformation they were looking for. In the end, they might want a refund or they don’t leave you a review. The consequences start to spin out of control. Remember, clear is kind. You can’t lose when you are clear about what you offer, who you offer it to, and what the transformation is that you sell. 

What Seeds are You Sowing?

You have a choice to sow different seeds. You have permission to do this differently. If you’ve always been someone who has sown in fear and desperation, you can make a change. In addition, you have to sow the seeds, water them, weed them, and care for them. You have to be consistent, every day. You can’t just plant the seeds and walk away.
