This evening we discuss two fascinating approaches to understanding Dalet Minim, the four species (Lulav, Etrog, Hadas, and Aravah) we take on Sukkot, based on an article by Dr. Arthur Schaffer, professor of Plant Biology. These approaches are based on a modern understanding of plant life in and around Israel today and in ancient times. We then explore a deeper understanding of the only Festival about which a movie will never be made, and the placid, transcendent experience of sitting in the Sukkah.

Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
