An Exciting Romance.
The Dragon and the Pearl by Jeannie Lin is set in China's 8th century and the world building is lovely. The major characters are Li Tao, a handsome but fierce warlord and Ling Suyin, a beautiful but vulnerable courtesan. This is a wonderful romance set in turbulent times. The chemistry between the two characters is palpable and so is their dialogue. The writing and scene setting is believable and well done.
This is a lovely read and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
Don't miss: thrilling, sensual, emotional historical romance!
Wow! What a great follow-up to Butterfly Swords. Jeannie Lin's voice is so unique and ravishing--and has only been growing in depth and power. Very spare, but gorgeous and heart-breakingly emotional without melodrama. I love the characters, the situation, the evocation of a complex culture, the tense plot, and the palpable feeling of watching two people fall truly in love. The minor characters are fabulous, too, and there are many fascinating secrets revealed along the way.....
Lin is really capturing the best elements of the warrior tales/movies she says she loved as a child. If you've enjoyed movies like CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, you'll love this book! Very, very satisfying.
Defies Expectations
So much about this book took me by surprise. I hated Li Tao in Butterfly Swords and really wanted to see him skewered and dead, but this book completely turned that around for me. And I'm usually not a fan of stories where the author seems to be defying a genre convention but then turns it back around with a kind of "gotcha!", but in this case, the reversal worked really well because it made complete sense in context to the story. This one is definitely my favorite of Jeannie Lin's work.
One of the best love stories ever!
The Dragon and the Pearl is one of the best love stories I have ever read. It had all the elements that I look for: a slow building romance, an intelligent heroine whose actions make sense and a hero that is strong and controlled and, best of all, an attraction that grows in spite of danger from every corner. If you like such elements, you will love this story. I have read and re-read it several times and only feel sorry that I can't discover the story anew. Well done, Jeannie Lin!
Everything you could hope for in a Romantic Novel
The strength of the characters along with their softer more vulnerable sides made this novel especially romantic. The history of the time was especially interesting. The novel kept me guessing all the time. The main character was also in The Butterfly Swords. It was interesting to me how I could dislike him in one book and come to understand, repsect, and admire him in The Dragon and the Pearl. The way Jeannie Lin develops her characters never ceases to amaze me.
