A prison in Susanville – a small town in one of the farthest reaches of the state, just east of the Lassen National Forest and by the Northern California-Nevada border, was signed off to be closed by early this past summer, but some locals, concerned with an economic hit to the community, were able to get a court to put a hold on that closure. Big news though last week: A judge has removed that injunction, meaning that the prison is going to be closed imminently.

We speak with by Brian Kaneda, the deputy director of Californians United for a Responsible Budget, or CURB, which is an organization dedicated to reducing imprisonment in our state by developing deep economic analyses about how it’s actually financially better for all of us, to reduce prisons.
