Everything Under the Sun

The History of the Salton Sea

Listen Later

The Salton Sea is known as the largest lake in southern California, and at one point in time it was a  tourism hot spot for the rich and famous.  Portions of the lake are now rapidly drying up, leaving behind a desolate, toxic dust bed that has been all but abandoned.  Toxic dust storms have been known to cause health problems that extend hundreds of miles away. This week we join meteorologist, Evan Myers to explore the history of the Salton Sea.  We talk about what role human error played in creating the resort area, and how it’s now a fight against nature and climate to fix the problem.
