In 1999, country music singer Garth Brooks aroused controversy when he created an alter ego, a fictional rock star named Chris Gaines. Following the release of the album Garth Brooks in...the Life of Chris Gaines as well as the album's lead-off single "Lost in You" (Brooks's only Top 40 hit), plans for a Chris Gaines movie fell by the board, and the character faded into obscurity.
Correction: "Way to the Girl" was performed by Brooks (as Gaines) on Saturday Night Live, not "Lost in You".
