- Think of the worst John Wayne western you ever saw
Written for a different time (published 1969) and for a white audience of that period. - Think of the worst John Wayne western you ever saw.
Most, if not all, of the dialogue is imagined. All the main characters are white and the brief mentions of Ute Indians are incidental. Given that this event was about a Ute battle with the US Army as they entered the Ute reservation and the killing of agent Nathan Meeker and his white male employees at the agency in response to Meeker calling in the Army as a show of force, there is little about the Ute people involved in this mostly fictionalized account of events. This portrayal of Meeker only slightly conforms to what he wrote and did at the time.
It is like a novel about apartheid in South Africa where all the main characters are white Europeans and native Africans have only an occasional mention.
