Genesis 12:1 - 17:27
The Pain (and the Gain) of Separation
Sometimes peace can only come after confrontation. Whether internal or external. After the shepherds of Abraham and Lot began to argue, the only way to keep the peace was for the two of them to go their own separate ways. When God calls us to separate from something that is familiar to us, it can render pain, but that separation leads to preparation and to gain. Abraham is the prototype of how we are called to live, because he was willing to leave everything to follow God to a place he was not familiar with. Sometimes it is needful to separate from influences that will impede us from the journey, just like Abraham found it necessary to be separated from Lot.
