Publisher's Summary:
The Pilgrim is the fourth book of The Alford Saga, following The Deserter, The Survivor, and The Pioneer.
In 1896, young rector Jack Alford is sent to the implacable, granite shores of Labrador on the vast St. Lawrence River. Hazards imperil his life as he travels this harsh 450-mile coastline by boat and dogsled, to visit his far-flung parishioners. Jack also manages to rescue a cook from the crew of a schooner to keep him company on his travels.
His zeal for the welfare of Labrador's hardy parishioners diverts Jack from his romance. Through summer storms that menace his tiny mission boat and fierce blizzards that almost annihilate his dog team, Jack brings succour to stranded families, care and leadership to villages perched on the windy granite, and, finally, inspired teachings in hilltop churches that stand as beacons of hope among the seal fishers and rugged pioneers of Labrador.

The Saga continues
I am not ashamed to admit that I have been drawn into the Alford Saga, hook line and sinker. The characters are so real. They are so well created that I can see them and their interactions in my minds eye. Paul Almond has produced a series that would do his ancestors proud.
I recommend not just a great book in The Pilgrim, but urge everyone to start from the first book in the saga. They are all well written. The characters come alive and their indomitable spirit is well suited to the harshness of the environment that they must either conquer or perish.
Enough to make me go to church
The Pilgrim is one of the best apologias for Christianity I have read, a latter-day Pilgrim's Progress through a northern Garden of Eden that is simultaneously both Heaven and Hell, complete with one of the most seductive she-devils you can imagine. In my opinion, this is the most moving and profound volume in the Alford Saga so far. The author's Christian in the shape of Rector Jack Alford is a wonderfully brave, multidimensional character, channeling Bunyan, Dostoievsky and Katzanzakis as he struggles to survive in one of the most inhospitable environments on earth, overcome agonizing doubts about his faith, resist numerous temptations of the flesh, and rise above recurring Sloughs of Despond, both metaphorical and literal. If anything could turn me into a Christian, this book would. Will Jack make it to the Wicket Gate? Buy the book to find out.
The Pilgrim
Exceptional attention to detail is one of many outstanding elements in "The Pilgrim", book four of The Alford Saga. Paul Almond reels you in and keeps you enthralled with his detailed descriptions that vividly bring to life the difficulties and challenges faced by pioneers living in the Canadian Labrador.
With his obvious love and respect for the land, Almond takes the reader on an epic and romantic journey as we follow Jack Alford, the new, young rector as he spends his first year tending to his widespread congregation.
