Human beings do not thrive when they are alone (or perceive that they are alone). David finds himself in such a predicament for the first time in his life and he doesn’t do well. He lies and manipulates. The ends (saving his own skin) seem to justify the means. Of course there are consequences and eventually (in a lonely cave) he moves OUT of himself and UP to God.
