Publisher's Summary:
1917. American boys have joined the Great War in Europe. On the homefront, mysterious occurrences like ships catching fire and factories blowing up have people wondering: is this German sabotage?
Hilda Lessing's family has been split apart due to the death of her father, and her uncle has found her a job doing housework on a friend's farm. Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz and their workers are German and a young train engineer whom she befriends on the way to the farm jokingly warns her to "Watch out for spies!"
Noting her concern, he suggests a signal. In case of trouble, she will hang a red scarf out of her window that he can see as he drives his train past. Hilda's life on the Schwartz farm is a misery. She toils from dawn to dusk and her employers and the farmhands are crude. Exhausted and hopeless, she comes to realize that the menace that seems to surround her involves their preparations to blow up a nearby railroad bridge.
Now on the alert, the clever girl makes plans to thwart them. Hilda may not be a soldier but she can still fight for her country! She has one huge advantage: none of them knows that she is completely fluent in German and can understand every word they say....

Another great story by Grace Livingston Hill
Another great story by Grace Livingston Hill. This one has more suspense and thrill than I expected. The courage and resourcefulness of the main character when she is put in stressful situations is admirable. Most of GLH's main characters are wonderful role models and the moral/spiritual lesson is always profound - this is such a wholesome book and it kept my attention from start to finish. I would recommend her books to anyone who can appreciate the good stuff from days gone by.
The Red Signal
This has always been one of my favorite books by GLH. It can be a little hard to read the German accent that she writes but it's entertaining, too. Hilda finds herself as an unwilling servant on a truck farm with no way of escape. She works with several men who really frighten her. The beginning of this book is very exciting as she plans her way of escape. It sort of reminded me of a Nancy Drew book the last time I read it (a good thing for me). I will leave my review at that, because I don't want to give anything away. This book is yet another winner for GLH
Like a slow leak in a favorite balloon
Well written and interesting, but the typos were plentiful in this one. Like a slow leak in a favorite balloon, you want to finish the story before all the air goes out and you have to give up from frustration. Wish I could read it again with the typos corrected!
Innocense & Espionage
Here is another great story by Grace Livingston Hill where the innocent young girl is placed in a new town with a new family to earn her living. Little does she know of the world beyond her sheltered childhood home, but she is determined to Go with God into a new adventure to help her mother and little brother. Prepared with love & wisdom from her mother and a deep faith in her Savior, she meets a situation no young girl would want to face. She is befriended by a young engineer on the train she must take to her new home. He rescues her when she was almost run over by the train! He tells her to hang a flag from her window if she is ever in need or danger.
