It’s a short story called “The Road Virus Heads North”. As with many things King writes about, it springs from something real in his own childhood and life, which he then twists into something horrifying. In this case, he wove the story around a painting he has in his home – a painting that apparently is not liked at all by his family. As Stephen King is a fan of photos and paintings coming to life in his stories, he was inspired to write this tale. “The Road Virus Heads North” tracks an author who buys a creepy painting at a yard sale which was painted by a metal-head neighbor just before he committed suicide. It was originally published in 1999 in an anthology book with other authors called “999” – and was later included in the Stephen King collection of stories, “Everything’s Eventual” in 2002.
