Editorial Reviews:
A dynamic cast brings life to Robert Louis Stevensons thrilling short story "The Sire de Maletroit's Door". On an evening in September 1429, with troops from Burgundy and England milling about town, 21-year-old cavalier Denis de Beaulieu swaggers to a friends home and stays past midnight. On the way back to his inn, he becomes lost. To escape a group of soldiers, he pushes through a mysterious door into a dark interior. When the door shuts, he discovers he is unable to get out. Alain, Sire de Maletroit, appears and gives the young man a choice: marry his niece or face death. Can Denis escape a bloody ending?

PUBLIC DOMAIN WORK
Bleh. Quite uninteresting, and predictable. A man somehow becomes trapped in the household of Sire de Maletroit, and is given a choice: marry the Sire's daughter, or be executed. There's a bit of back and forth with the girl, as both profess a desire to not be trapped in a marriage without love, but as both show obvious signs of infatuation with the other. And, of course, in the end, they agree to marriage.
There's nothing to really interest the reader, unless you're a fan of Gothic literature and you are SERIOUSLY scraping the barrel for a new read.
This story is in the public domain. you can find a free audio version at Librivox.org, or a free etext at Gutenberg.org.
awesome story
I read this story in my English literature class, and I originally dreaded it, but I LOVED it! I haven't read the Kindle version, but I based this off of my reading experience in literature. The first page or 2 were a little detailed, but as soon as the main character (Denis) goes through the Sire de Maletroit's door, the rest is amazing. It is a very romantic story, and hilarious too. A true romantic comedy, written by a classic author! It is based in France in the fifteenth century.
The plot is basically this: A young man is walking in a town, and realizes he is being followed. The only thing he can do is go through a door, even though he has no idea what is on the other side. When he goes through, there is the Sire de Maletroit, who accuses him of having an inappropriate relationship with his niece, and he can now either marry her or be put to death. Denis and Blanche (the Sire's niece) have until the next morning to decide what to do. The story is totally funny and sweet at the same time.
