Publisher's Summary:
A beautifully crafted, consistently thought-provoking, and deeply intimate work by one of the most insightful writers of our time. A startling encounter on a New York subway platform leads two strangers to a run-down tenement where a life-or-death decision must be made. In that small apartment, 'Black' and 'White', as the two men are known, begin a conversation that leads each back through his own history. Their aim is no less than this: to discover the meaning of life.

Missing piece?
There are about 4 pages of the book missing from this reading, at the beginning of chapter 3. Black's story about aa and the drunks with the hiding of the whiskey in the toilet is missing.
Too much hard work
As a fan of McCarthy I was really disappointed by this, and despite being a short story, I still gave up on it. It's well acted but plays out like one of those godawful stage plays that university drama societies put on to appear high-brow. Just too painful to finish. Read Blood Meridian instead.
Apotheosis
Cornac McCarthy writes books that will leave you changed. This is one of his best. Shorter, a novel 'in dramatic form'. The reading is rich with drama. The prose excellent, sinuous - philosophy mixed with theology to profound effect. The simple antithesis of the two characters - Black and White - as sharply drawn as one could imagine. They transcend their stereotypes, each the epitome, the apotheosis of all they represent.
