At the time of the construction of the original Nauvoo Temple, the prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, commissioned the construction of a tomb for his family.

We know this through historical records and design drawings of the tomb by William Weeks, the architect of the Nauvoo Temple.

Because Joseph was never buried there, the location of the tomb has been clouded through time.

Joseph Johnstun is an historical analyst from Fort Madison, Iowa. He has been an historical consultant and advisor for numerous publications, projects, and media presentations on historic sites, documents, and artifacts. He is one of the leading scholars on Nauvoo, Illinois, history, and is widely considered to be the expert on the murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.
