The Encouraging Word

The Unity Of The Father And The Son

Listen Later

Episode 17: The Unity of Father and Son

Series: Week 4 – Penal Substitution (Assurance)

In this episode of The Encouraging Word, Pastor Eric reflects on the unity of the Father and the Son in the saving work of the cross. One of the most common misunderstandings of Penal Substitution is the idea that the Father and the Son stand opposed to one another — one angry, the other merciful.

But Scripture reveals something very different.

The cross is not a moment of divine conflict, but divine cooperation. The Father does not punish an unwilling Son, and the Son does not rescue us from an unwilling Father. Instead, the triune God acts together in perfect love to redeem humanity.

The cross reveals not division within God — but unity in love. Salvation is the work of the whole Godhead, given freely for our restoration.

 Scripture:

John 10:18

 Series Focus:

Penal Substitution is grounded in the unified love and action of the triune God — Father, Son, and Spirit working together to redeem humanity.

 Music:

Bumper music: “Mercy Flows” (original instrumental composition, 2006)

 Encouraging Word for Today:

The cross does not reveal division in God — it reveals the united love of Father and Son for you.

Reflection Prompt:

How does your view of God change when you see the cross as the unified action of divine love rather than divine conflict?
