Publisher's Summary:
From the author of The Physician and Shaman comes this story of a young man - the grapes he grows, the wine he fashions, the women he loves, and his struggle against an evil that seeks to destroy him. Already an international best seller.
Josep Alvarez is a young man in the tiny grape-growing village of Santa Eulália, in Northern Spain, where his father grows black grapes that are turned into cheap vinegar. Joseph loves the agricultural life, but he is the second son, and his father's vineyard will be inherited by his brother Donat, the firstborn. Josep needs to keep his hands in the soil. He yearns for a job growing grapes and for an opportunity to marry Teresa Gallego.
In Madrid, an assassination plot conceived against the political leader of Spain by men of wealth and power creates a storm of intrigue that sucks into its vortex a group of innocent young farm workers in Santa Eulália. How Josep's life is changed drastically by these events and how, ironically, they gradually turn him into an inspired vintner with an evolving vision of life is the fascinating story of The Winemaker.

What I Call "A Good Read"
A story always in motion of basically good, ordinary people, coping with living in simpler but much more difficult times. It required hard work, appreciating simple pleasures, and treating people with love. and compassion. You will come away with more knowledge not only of wine making, but all of life before the modern era. And you just might find yourself treating all the people around you with much more care and love.
Wine, Work, Love and Life
I love visiting vineyards and the story of Josep and the family vineyard where grapes were grown that made wine suitable only for vinegar was filled with stories of winemaking. Josep's story took place in Spain shortly after the deposition of Queen Isabella and the political unrest that was occurring. His travels, his years in France and his return to his homeland in Spain continued to draw me into the story. A very good read. I didn't want to put it down.
The Winemaker
This is one of my favorite authors, he is able to transport you to places and times you never dreamed of going. This was a mesmerizing story that spanned generations of a family and told the stories of their lives. His writing never fails to touch my heart.
The Winemaker
Very well written, it gives us a glimpse of late ninthteen century Spain, of the deceiving politicians and their schemes involving innocents peasants fighting yet, another futile war. We witness the struggles of a young man and his family as they try to survive tradition and poverty.
More Noah Gordon historical novel goodness!
Gordon is a wonderful story-teller, with a subtle dollop of historical education thrown in for good measure. His work is most enjoyable, and I was sorry when the book ended.
