1. Hurricane Melissa has made landfall in southwestern Jamaica, with estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 mph, a tie for the strongest hurricane landfall ever on record in the Atlantic. This makes it the strongest storm to hit that country since record-keeping began 174 years ago.
2. Democratic attorneys general and governors from 25 states and the District of Columbia have sued the Trump administration seeking to force the continued of funding of the SNAP program. The funding will be paused this weekend because of the federal government shutdown. 1 in 8 Americans use SNAP to help buy groceries. The legal action contends the Trump administration is legally required to use a contingency fund to pay for the food assistance program. President Trump is refusing to do that.
