Trump Ends Canada Trade Talks Over Ontario Ad

On October 24, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended all trade negotiations with Canada, citing Ontario’s C$75-million anti-tariff campaign as the final straw. The ad, featuring excerpts from a 1987 Ronald Reagan speech, drew sharp criticism from Washington and the Reagan Foundation, which accused Canada of misrepresentation.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to resume talks “when the U.S. is ready,” while Premier Doug Ford stands by the ad’s message. The fallout raises fresh uncertainty for Canada’s steel, aluminum, and automotive industries, already strained under U.S. tariffs.
