It has been a difficult week at The Valley.

TVCC assistant football coach Bill Neal died Sunday at the age of 82.

"Coach Neal has been with us and been a very, very big part of our staff, our family, our program," said Coach Sherard Poteete.

The Cardinals (2-1) fell to No. 9 in the NJCAA DI Football Poll this week after Saturday night's 20-17 loss to Tyler.

Two problem areas against Tyler were red zone offense and third-down conversions. The Cardinals were just 4-of-17 on third down Saturday night.

"We moved the ball really well," said Coach Poteete. "We had good yardage, good gains, big plays, but we've got to be better on third down and in the red zone."

The Cardinals are concentrating on those areas this week as they prepare for the Cisco Wranglers, who come into Bruce Field this week with a 2-0 record.

Coach Poteete said it is a little hard to know who the Wranglers are right now because they've only played one game against a quality opponent, beating Blinn. They also have a new coaching staff.

"We've got very limited sample film from them," he said. "I know their coaches had success in the past and so they're going to be ready to play."

One thing TVCC does know is that Wrangler quarterback Christian Kaopua can play.

"He's an athletic kid," said Coach Poteete. "He throws the ball well, he can run a little bit, and he's playing really well for them."

Controlling Kaopua will be key for the Cardinals.

"He has been very slippery when he's gotten out and run, and he's been very accurate when he's thrown," said Coach Poteete. "So, can we get him out of his comfort zone and put him in long situations?"

Saturday is Family Day at The Valley. Kickoff against Cisco is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bruce Field.
