What exactly is U.S. intelligence and how does America use it to craft strategies to confront or engage North Korea? Former National Intelligence Officer Markus Garlauskas joins the show to talk about the limits and strengths of intelligence, estimative analysis, North Korea's nuclear program, ICBMs and other missile capabilities. Garlauskas also discussed summits, why 2015 was in fact the closest the Korean peninsula has come to war in recent years (not 2018), and shares advice on careers related to the Korean peninsula.

Markus V. Garlauskas led the U.S. intelligence community’s strategic analysis on North Korea as the National Intelligence Officer for North Korea from July 2014 to June 2020, after serving in U.S. Forces Korea for 12 years. Following the conclusion of his government appointment as a member of the Senior National Intelligence Service, he joined the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security of the Atlantic Council as a nonresident senior fellow affiliated with its Asia Security Initiative. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un led a salvo missile launch to test the country’s “Nuclear Trigger’ system” for the first time this week. NK News Deputy Managing Editor Alannah Hill (@alannahmhill) sits down in the studio to discuss the test, as well as the release of a new song praising the country’s “friendly father” and allegations that DPRK animators may have had a hand in a popular Amazon Prime show.

Then, North Korea analyst Jacob Bogle joins the podcast to discuss his work on the AccessDPRK blog, which maps the DPRK using open-source satellite imagery.
