海外で言葉が通じない時、笑顔はしばしばコミュニケーションのツールとして威力を発揮します。ところが、これは全世界で通用するわけではないかも知れません。

会話の舞台はニュージーランド、そして今回「文化警察」に助けを求めているのはロシアからの観光客です。これらの国では、笑顔にまつわる習慣が正反対のようですね。いったいどのように異なっているのでしょうか。

「文化警察24時」は、少し英語が苦手！という皆さんを対象にした、長さもレベルも聞きやすい番組です。しっかり聞いて、しっかり声に出して練習してみましょう。

（初級）Culture Cops (7): In New Zealand, featuring Russian culture

M: HELP! HELP!

Val: Yes, sir. How can I help you?

M: Everyone keeps smiling at me! It’s so rude! I’m scared…

Val: Oh… you’re not from New Zealand, are you?

M: No, I’m from Russia. But I’m here in Auckland on vacation. I thought people from New Zealand were supposed to be really nice, but everyone keeps laughing at me and smiling!

Val: Well, have no fear: Officer Val is here! You see young one: here in New Zealand and in a lot of other places around the world, smiling at a stranger is just another way of saying “hello.” I understand that in Russia it’s very rude to smile at strangers. However, different countries have different cultures. We New Zealanders are just SO happy about everything that we just can’t help but smile!

M: I see!

Val: OK. Um… Just one thing: Why are you standing there showing me your teeth like a dog?

M: I’m smiling!
