What Is a Missionary in the Bible? Evangelist, Missions, and the Great Commission Explained

Listen Later

Most churches talk about “missions,” support “missionaries,” and hold big faith-promise conferences…but are we actually doing **New Testament missions**? In this episode of The Cancelled Preacher, we ask a hard question: **What *is* a missionary in the Bible?** Are we really sending evangelists to regions beyond—or just funding pastors overseas while most of the world still dies without ever hearing the name of Jesus even once?Starting from Christ’s Great Commission and the gift of the **evangelist** in Ephesians 4, we contrast the biblical pattern of Paul and the early church with the modern Independent Baptist missions machine. We talk about “career missionaries,” missionary visas, support levels nobody wants to publish, and the devastating statistic that the average missionary spends only about **3%** of his time in direct evangelism with the lost. We also show how churches have replaced simple, Bible ways of giving with **gimmicks**—faith promise, designated envelopes, endless special offerings—and how that creates broken vows, legal problems, and a powerless church.🔍 In this episode, we discuss:* What a biblical missionary/evangelist actually is according to the New Testament* Why most “missionaries” function as pastors overseas instead of evangelists to unreached regions* Shocking stats about unreached people, the 10/40 window, and how little evangelism is really happening* The difference between a pastor, an evangelist, and a missionary in Scripture* How faith-promise missions, designations, and constant fundraising undermine simple, biblical giving* Why churches are entertainment-driven at home and numbers-driven on the mission field* Why God’s work must be done God’s way or it loses His power, no matter how big the budget is📖 Key passages mentioned:Matthew 28:18–20; Mark 16:15; Acts (Paul’s missionary journeys); Ephesians 4:11–12; Romans 1; Proverbs 30; Acts 5; Acts 2:41–47, and others. If you care about biblical missions, evangelism, and the Great Commission, this conversation will challenge almost everything you’ve been told about “missions programs.”👍 If this helped you, like the video, leave a comment, and subscribe to The Cancelled Preacher channel so you don’t miss future episodes.⏱ Chapters:0:00 Modern missions exposed – are we really obeying the Great Commission?2:40 Statistics on the unreached and the failure of the modern church5:00 The Great Commission vs the Great Omission – why urgency is gone7:16 What is a missionary in the Bible?
