What Is Plato's "Ladder of Love" (The Scala Amoris)?

Listen Later

Ever wonder where the idea of "platonic love" comes from? In this Episode, we discuss the celebrated passage from Plato's dialogue the Symposium known as "the ladder of love" or the scala amoris. In the passage, Plato describes a drinking party, where the guests take turns giving praise for love, or more specifically, "the god of love." In the middle of the dialogue, it is Socrates' turn to give his praising account of love, and, in doing so, Socrates recounts his discussion with the (oracle-like) prophetess Diotima; a discussion that tells the story of the scala amoris, the ladder of love.
