Ephesians 5:15-16 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
We are rounding out our mini-series, Jesus Walks, by looking at walking in wisdom! The main statement in this passage is found in the very beginning: "Be very careful, then, how you live," and the rest provides the description for what this wise living looks like. The text literally translates to "watch closely how you walk," and it carries the connotation of something done with accuracy, precision, or with a lot of great attention to detail. The theme of 15 is then repeated in verse 17.
To be wise is to understand the will of God, which is a repeat of verse 10 and corresponds with all of the Old Testament wisdom tradition that stands behind these verses.
The call to live wisely isn't a call for theoretical knowledge (or more accurately, philosophical knowledge as was rampant in Ephesus). Many in that town "knew" all the right answers but didn't live out their beliefs, and this call in Ephesians is a call for discernment and living out your Christlikeness in the real world. The emphasis is once again on the mind and on careful attention to keep life on target: the target being that which pleases Christ in both word and deed.
What's interesting is in the following passage is that living wisely, life in the Spirit, describes a life full of song. Singing has two audiences; Christians sing to each other reminding one another of God's character and the salvific work of Christ and also unto the Lord, offering praise to the One who is faithful to finish what He started. Wise living, then, is a life of worship.
