What will the new Māori Health Authority do?

The government unveiled a major shake-up of the health sector this morning. It will set up a brand new Māori Health Authority, which will set policies for Māori health and fund services. Such an Authority was a key recommendation in the Waitangi Tribunal's Kaupapa Inquiry report in 2019, which found serious Treaty breaches and failings by the Crown to close the persistent gap between Māori and non-Māori health outcomes. The Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare has responsibility for Māori Health, and speaks to Midday Report's Meriana Johnsen.
