We had the pleasure of spending the better part of two hours talking with an early innovator in the world of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), John Forsyth. Our conversation waxes between our own early experiences of radical behavioral approaches to cognition, that thoughts don't necessarily cause behavior. We talk about the implications of what it means to do acceptance-based work as professionals and in our personal lives.
John has co-authored many books, two of which were early iterations of ACT applied to anxiety that helped shape the early technology/methodology of ACT into practical, usable exercises and metaphors for broad clinical application. Specifically:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Disorders: A Practitioner's Treatment Guide to Using Mindfulness, Acceptance, and Values-Based Behavior Change Strategies
The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety: A Guide to Breaking Free from Anxiety, Phobias, and Worry Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
John has published much more and presents his work internationally. You can find out more about John Forsyth here: https://www.drjohnforsyth.com
The ACT in Context Podcast is co-hosted by Timothy Gordon & Joanne Steinwachs.
