Words of Mass Disruption: Ep 115 Transforming a 133 Year Old Newspaper Business into a Modern Digital Company

Listen Later

This week we sit down with Nicki Purcell the Chief Digital Officer of the Dallas Morning News and talk about what they have done to move a traditional legacy print news business into the modern digital age. We walk through the cultural changes, the technical challenges and figuring out what they do best.

We also talk about the dramatic events of the evening in July last year (2016), when they launched the new brand and site. The same night the worst mass shooting in Dallas history was happening right outside their doors. We get an inside look into the decisions to push forward so that they could provide the crucial data needed to the public at a tragic time of great need.

There are many different ways to go to market, but if you do not take the time up front to define a plan and define what digital means to your company, you will be fighting a losing battle. Come with us as we learn from Nicki, who built her career as a marketer in tech, how she  used that experience to turn a legacy branded journalist house into a house of brands. This is the ultimate intersection of culture and technology, and we hear the lessons she learned, like how to use technology as an enabler to make everyone's job easier and work more efficiently.

Also, a big thanks to Kenton Kisler from Executive Connection for connecting me with Nicki Purcell. Check out his organization at www.execsconnection.com
