Christmas during Summer?

A woman from New Zealand and a man from the US talk.

M: Ah, it's Christmas soon!

W: Yeah, I can't believe they don't really celebrate Christmas here in Japan. We even have classes on Christmas Day!

M: Ah! Yeah, a real bummer! But in Japan they celebrate the New Year a lot more than in America. But I'll miss having a white Christmas with all my family!

W: Oh, that's right, Christmas is during winter for you in America. I forgot. Does it normally snow where you are at Christmas?

M: Yeah, it's great! We have snowball fights, build snowmen, and warm up by the fire. And we eat a huge Christmas dinner! Is your Christmas not like that?

W: No, since we're in the southern hemisphere, Christmas is during summer in New Zealand.

M: That must be weird! What do you normally do on Christmas day?

W: Usually the weather is good, so we go to the beach, have a bbq, and just generally chill out.

M: Wow, you have a bbq for Christmas dinner? Ha ha. What a weird idea!

W: But a lot of people also have ham in New Zealand. Do you normally have turkey for dinner?

M: Actually, because we have Thanksgiving the month before, and we eat so much turkey at Thanksgiving, we usually have a different meat, like beef or ham.

W: Oh, you have ham too? My Mum loves ham. She just can't get enough of it! But my favourite part of Christmas dinner is pavlova.

M: What's pavlova?

W: It's like meringue pie, basically egg'n sugar, baked into this crunchy sweet thing. Then we add whipped cream and fruits and, voilà, you have a delicious dessert! It's quite popular in New Zealand. Hey, shall I make some for you?

M: Sounds great!
