The Chinese mainland will become the most popular destination for Australian students choosing to study abroad in a year or two, with the implementation and expansion of the New Colombo Plan.

The New Colombo Plan is an initiative by the Australian government to support Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in countries of Indo-Pacific area, including China.

Second only to the United States, the Chinese mainland is the second most popular destination for Australian students studying abroad.

Australian education officials say with the expansion of the New Colombo Plan, China may probably overtake the United States in around a year or two.

The plan was piloted last year, with 40 scholars and more than 1,300 students being sent to live, study and undertake internships in four locations: China’s Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore.
