מבואר בפ' נח שבניית התיבה נמשכה 120 שנה. ולכאו' הרי ידוע מעלת ענין הזריזות לקיים ציווי ה'?! ואע"פ שבמשך זמן זה הזהיר נח את אנשי דורו שיחזרו בתשובה, אבל היו יכולים לבנות את התיבה מיד והוא הי' ממשיך להזהיר את אנשי דורו במשך 120?! והביאור – בפשטות: ציווי ה' היתה "עשה לך תיבת עצי גופר וגו'" – שבניית התיבה הי' צ"ל ע"י נח עצמו – לבד! ומובן בפשטות למה זה לקח כ"כ זמן! ובפרט שבאותו זמן הי' הוא צריך גם להזהיר את אנשי דורו וכו'. הנפק"מ להלכה: מסופר בגמ' שבנו של סנחריב מצא דף מתיבת נח ועשאו ע"ז, ולפי הנ"ל זה עדיין מותר בהנאה מכיון שהציווי לנח הי' "עשה לך" ו"אין אדם אוסר דבר שאינו שלו" (וזה נוגע אם פעם ימצאו את התיבה וכו'). ההוראה: כאשר מדובר אודות הצלת כמה בני אדם, הנה אע"פ שהוא "מנהיג הדור" וטוען מה לו ולהתעסק בעצמו עם "בניית תיבה"?!..., עליו לדעת שאם יש לו ציווי "עשה לך וגו'" אסור לו למסרו ל"משרתים", אלא להתעסק בזה בעצמו!, ובודאי שזה לא יפגע בתפקידו להזהיר את אנשי דורו וכו'.

It took Noach 120 years to build the Teivah, which seems to conflict with the importance of fulfilling Hashem’s command with alacrity?! And although Noach spent this time warning the people to do teshuvah, seemingly he could have built the Teivah immediately, and then continued to warn them for 120 years? The explanation is straightforward: Hashem commanded Noach to “Make for yourself a Teivah” – meaning he had to build it by himself, which obviously took a very long time, especially considering that he also had to spend that time warning the people etc. The practical takeaway in halacha: The Gemara relates that Sancheriv’s son found a plank from Noach’s Teivah and made it into an idol; based on the above, if that plank was discovered, it would still permissible to derive benefit from that plank: because Noach was told to “Make for yourself a Teivah of gopher wood,” the Teivah belonged to Noach, and “A person cannot make forbidden that which does not belong to him.” The lesson: when it comes to saving people’s lives, someone who is a leader of his generation may argue that it’s not for him to personally deal with “building the Teivah,” and that he has to occupy himself with “warning the people of his generation.” But he must know that if he has been commanded to “Make for yourself etc.,” it is forbidden for him to delegate that job to others; rather he must do it himself. And then he can be sure that it won’t detract from his role of warning the people of his generation etc.
