The most common complaint I get in my practice as a psychologist, is that most therapists don't have a solid and definable treatment plan! More concerned about helping the patient vent their feelings or manage their symptoms, many forms of therapies and many therapists fail to go to the CAUSE of the problem. After years of doing traditional psychotherapy it is crystal clear that what patients want is a SYSTEM that helps them IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, PROCESS IT THROUGH, and PARADIGM SHIFT into SOLUTION. Red flags that your therapist needs to be fired, or at least told that the therapy is going nowhere is when: He or she does not give you a clear indication of the PLAN, looks at the clock more often than he or she looks at YOU, makes you feel guilty and shameful about your behavior, tells you what to do even against your letting him or her know that it doesn't feel right, and continuing to allow you to vent your feeling without helping you learn to help yourself. Before you FIRE YOUR THERAPIST, be fair and let him or her know what is or isn't working for you. If you can't resolve it together, it might be time to move on. Today we shrunk that tune: "Don't Leave Me This Way" By Teddy Pendergrass.
