The shooting at UCSB is a prime example of a breakdown of all defense mechanisms (PANEL 5) and a representation of how emotional suppression can cause explosions (the shootings) and implosions (the suicide). Not knowing the first few years of Elliot Roger's life, we can only surmise that the killer was severely wounded in PANEL 1 (The Wound of Childhood).

As the wound festered, jealous rage, pent up over time broke down into mass murder and suicide. When there is no ability to express the repress, or when CAUSE--the original childhood wound is not healed, violent breakdowns such as this incident and others like it occur.

Through self expression, the pent up feelings can be released. The hostility need not be projected onto others, or directed at the self. Projection is a release valve that doesn't ultimately accomplish the intended release of emotion. Instead, it only causes new problems. Life is a series of breakdowns and breakthroughs. When we can use our emotional pain to effect therapeutic breakthroughs we grow and evolve.
