Jake introduces how this episode features what were originally four separate episodes on building your skill with analogies. Below are the original shownotes from those episodes:

Show Notes

Episode 17.5.1.S

(2017.May.Week 1.Skill Episode)

Power of Analogy

  1. What is an analogy?
    1. Building a logical connection between two things to change perspective/enlighten.
    2. Most often one complex idea is compared to a simple/well-known idea
    3. Power
      1. Carries a lot of punch in a short span of words.
      2. Easier to Remember
      3. A new way of understanding is the foundation to a new way of living
      4. Example
        1. Lewis: “There is none of our impulses which the Moral Law may not sometimes tell us to suppress, and none which it may not sometimes tell us to encourage. It is a mistake to think that some of our impulses—say mother love or patriotism—are good, and others, like sex or the fighting instinct, are bad. All we mean is that the occasions on which the fighting instinct or the sexual desire need to be restrained are rather more frequent than those for restraining mother love or patriotism. But there are situations in which it is the duty of a married man to encourage his sexual impulse and of a soldier to encourage the fighting instinct. There are also occasions on which a mother’s love for her own children or a man’s love for his own country have to be suppressed or they will lead to unfairness towards other people’s children or countries. Strictly speaking, there are no such things as good and bad impulses. Think once again of a piano. It has not got two kinds of notes on it, the ‘right’ notes and the ‘wrong’ ones. Every single note is right at one time and wrong at another. The Moral Law is not any one instinct or set of instincts: it is something which makes a kind of tune (the tune we call goodness or right conduct) by directing the instincts.”
        2. Try it yourself
          1. 5 minutes to come up with 5 analogies about how Jesus sets people free. Only can use things you can see.
          2. Pick one of the five and make it better throughout the day.

            Episode 17.5.2.S

            (2017.May.Week 2.Skill Episode)

            Growing Analogies

            1. Mustard spinach…
            2. Have to understand complex to compare it to the simple. But how to do that?
            3. Powerful analogy grows out of curiosity, space, and nurture
                1. Think deeply…stay curious
                2. Alone (Ender’s Game example)
                3. Follow trains of thought (like a pause while reading)
                4. Reflect (see from different spot/angel)
                5. Nurture we will be talking about next week with sources of inspiration.
                6. What’s the one thing you can do now to grow an analogy?
                7. 3

                    (2017.May.Week 4.Skill Episode)

                    Some Don’ts

What not to do with analogies (basically the opposites of the strengths):

                    1. Compare two complex/unknowns
                      1. Lowering resistance on exhaust and soupy batches of mud…
                      2. Be false/disingenuous on the simple side
                        1. Grab a baseball card by its edges…
                        2. Bore/confuse
                          1. What if I went into all the details of Zack Grenkie on that perfect game analogy
                          2. ...more
