There are certain preliminary questions I usually ask when contacted for assistance in helping to develop or improve a “Leadership Training Program.” These questions (whether for a business, non-profit or ministry) are thought provoking questions that are directed to the owner or manager.
I want to have the owner/manager outline the specific qualities needed for each leadership position within the organization. I do not want these answered around the personality, strengths or weaknesses of the person currently holding the position. But “if” the manager could hire the perfect person, what would those qualities be?
This first question will shape the overall goal of the training program. By identifying what the goal of each position is (for the “perfect” leader in that area), we can then design a framework to help any person to excel in that position of leadership. This is a way achieve mastery and proficiency in that position. It also will allow the owner/manager an effective evaluation of the person who is operating in that leadership role.
