A piece for four-part voices and piano, although the Sopranos and Tenors double each other throughout the piece, as do the Altos and Basses. The piano provides a rhythmic, ostinato-like accompaniment.

As the title suggests, the text is based on the opening words of Genesis, but this piece would work well as a general introit for worship.
