Max Wieland has an extensive background in personal practice with this cactus medicine, as well as experience in preparation of the sacrament and facilitation of it’s use. He has been working with this cactus for over a decade and has developed his own style of facilitation, namely utilizing heavy dosing, darkness, silence, and adjunct compounds such as psilocybin or DMT. His own developed practice stands in contrast to the often milder, daytime, ritual-heavy practice of the Mestizo/Christian influenced ceremonies common to Peru. Max is a former founder of the Peruvian retreat center “Munay Medicine” which offers various plant medicine retreats and is currently a figurehead in the Decriminalize Nature Pittsburgh movement. He is a talented visionary artist and founder of the Facebook group Wachuma Collective, which boasts over a thousand members.

Huachuma is a lesser-known shamanic medicine, but one that some consider the greatest of all plant teachers on the South American continent. The San Pedro cactus, or Trichocereus Peruvians, is comprised principally of the naturally occurring hallucinogen: mescaline. Though it has parallels to the iboga ceremonies of West Africa and the ayahuasca ceremonies of the Amazon, huachuma and the curanderos who use it originate in the Andes of Peru and surrounding regions.

According to Max, the earliest record of contact with this plant dates back 8,600 years, where specimens were found in a cave. It has been used as a sacrament by the Chavín culture on the west coast of South America for 3,000 years. The Chavín produced many sacred designs of a deity clutching the distinctive cactus, making it one of the oldest recorded psychedelic medicines on the planet. Its use today extends into northern Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador, where seldom few curanderos practice in the original Chavín tradition.
